Van der Veer Designers has taken part in the trade mission to the regions of Baden Württemberg and Hessen in Germany. The economic mission was aimed at strengthening the cooperation between the Netherlands and the southern German region.
The purpose of the mission was to focus on the industrial and innovative quality that the Netherlands has to offer. Together with the Royal delegation Van der Veer Designers visited the cities of Wiesbaden, Rüsselsheim and Stuttgart. Several companies in the automotive sector were visited, including the headquarters of Opel and Bosch and the Mercedes Benz Technology Center.

In celebration of the coronation of King Willem Alexander, Van der Veer Designers designed a set of special bikes: The Gazelle King and Queen Limited Editions, ‘the King’s couple’. They stand out by their stylish, classic appearance, golden accents and unique finishing. At an affordable price of 599 euros one can be the proud owner of an exclusive Gazelle King or Queen.

Since April 15th, the roof of our office is covered with 100 Solar Panels. The energy production will amount to some 20.000 kWh/year. On a display, located at the studio’s entrance, the daily energy production can be witnessed.
The investment in these panels fits in our vision to work towards a more sustainable society.

For this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, Van der Veer Designers decided to go with a 4 headed team to the event. We visited the Rho (exhibition), Zona Tortona, and the new and upcoming neigbourhood; Lambrate Ventura.
Aside from the new collections presented by the larger brands, there were also a lot of different and surprising designs to be seen, by young and well known designers and students. Of the many photographs taken a trend report is currently being compiled. This report will provide us with inspiration for many upcoming projects.

Eurovision Worldwide has several eyewear brands (You’s, Youpi!, De Stijl, Tulipe Noire).
Van der Veer Designers assists Eurovisie twice a year in designing new collections. At the Mido the latest collections were presented and received very well.

Artist Mieke de Waal from Geldermalsen asked Van der Veer Designers for assistance in designing and building her artpiece “BookprintArt” for the Health counsil in The Hague. The artpiece exists out of an object in the shape of a dress that is made out of geographical and anatomical school maps. Around the dress she made a framework of stacked books that come from the Health counsil’s library where they decided to go over to paperless working.

At the beginning of a development Context Mapping can give insight into the needs and dreams of users and give inspiration to the developers / designers.
Context mapping is an associative accessible method that can be used pragmatically in various development projects.
The user is the expert of his own use and needs. The designer remaines the design expert.
Annelies den Besten has participated in a two-day master class on the subject at the IDE TU Delft.

The new double pannier Joli Double for the brand New Looxs is designed by Van der Veer Designers. Annelies den Besten of Van der Veer Designers was commissioned by Burgers Lederwaren to made the design for a female styled bicycle bag, which fits very well in the Vera line with rose print. This bag is an extension on the extensive collection New Looxs bicycle bags and bicycle baskets. Van der Veer Designers is responsible for a large part of this collection.

The new Gazelle bike-collection features the new Finta tire. The innovative aspect of this tire is the 2 component production technology, allowing the use of multiple colours. Unique is the coloured relief on the sidewall of the tire. Van der Veer Designers provided the design and the final production drawings.

Van der Veer Designers is now involved in a program to develop new Design Methods inspired by nature, such as C2C and Biomimicry. Together with partners as TU Delft, Design United, agentschapNL, Philips Design, Tauw, Océ, Festo, Ideal & Co, Ro & Ad, Van Gansewinkel etc. The approach to combine Research & Education, Government and Commercial Companies of all sorts, should guarantee a set of pragmatic guidelines.

After the C2C course at EPEA in Hamburg, a first reunion of fresh C2C Concultants was held in the Netherlands in februari 2012. A second meeting was held in Hamburg last November. The object for both meetings being the same: Sharing our experiences and progress with our international collegues. Design studio’s Mutter and BFGF design studio planned a fantastic event, both culturally as well as in terms of content.

Since 1 November 2012 My First Buddha is for sale. Van der Veer Designers is responsible for the design of these special soft toys and for the packaging design. Van der Veer Designers were commissioned to design two series of Buddha soft toys. Both Buddha’s have a friendly facial expression. Van der Veer Designers tried to make a respectful translation of a classic Buddha into a soft toy.
In order to complete the story Van der Veer Designers designed a gift box for every Buddha. The Buddha is visible and palpable through a round window in the box.

At Eurobike DAHON presented their 2013 collection. A collection that was developed in close cooperation with VdVD. For a large number of folding bikes VdVD designed the styling. Colours and product graphics are aimed at specific target groups; a new way of working for Dahon.
The Dahon eezz (styled by VdVD) won a Eurobike Award.

As of July 1, 2012 Imre Jacobs has become partner at Van der Veer Designers BV. After his graduation, Imre worked as a designer at Van der Veer Designers for five years. He left to become Design Manager at Inspirate BV where he was responsible for the creation of the new juvenile brand Nuna. After that, Imre ran his own successful design agency JCOBS BV. Through the merger with JCOBS BV and with Imre joining the board, Van der Veer Designers has become an even stronger and broader organization. As an experienced designer and entrepreneur, Imre will be focusing on new relationships and new challenges with existing clients.

The Gazelle Orange Plus Innergy XT has won the Australische Award. The Gazelle E-bike is a styled by Van der Veer Designers. Van der Veer Designers was also responsible for the design of most of the electronic components.

On August 26 and 27 Gazelle presented their new bicycle collection 2013 to their dealers. Van der Veer Designers was responsible for the styling of this complete bicycle collection. The first orders show an enthousiastic response from the dealers.
All bicycles are designed for specific target groups and the styling is optimised for each of them. High end bicycles have a more modest and stylish look, while bicycles for youngsters have a more outspoken and refreshing look.
In the bicycle market the Gazelle bicycles are seen as the benchmark for good product styling.

Last week we received a Eurobike Award for our design of the Yepp Upp. This is an unique accessory which enables you to transform your bicycle child seat in a high chair. Take your Yepp upp with you to the grand parents or for a stop on the go. No high chair needed! Due to its compact size Yepp Upp can easily be taken with you on your bike using the complementary bag.

Some 7 months after following the C2C-course at EPEA in Hamburg, Van der Veer Designers organized an evaluation meeting for the graduees of June 2011.On February 10th, two company visits were programmed. At first the group received a guided tour of the Piet Hein Eek Design-complex by the man himself. In contrast the next visit brought us to Philips Design for a conversation with Gavin Proctor. The evening was reserved for the actual evaluation meeting. Experiences and frustrations were shared, resulting in us having the same fresh and enthousiastic attitude as we had directly after the course.

After performing a photo shoot, to promote the UltiMaker 3d printer, Van der Veer Designers has proceeded acquiring one. The main objective is to be able to make prototypes at an earlier stage of the design process.
The UltiMaker is a DIY kit. The printer is put together by two people in two half days. Two materials are available: PLA and ABS.
PLA is a biodegradable plastic.
Currently we are working hard to optimize workflow, enabling us reliable 3d printing in the future.

At the trade fair FietsVAK 2012, the GoCab won a Bicycle Innovation Award 2012. The design and implementation has been done with obvious care. The bike is very manoeuvrable and stable. It has a single front wheel making the turning circle very short.
Award encourages product innovation
The Bicycle Innovation Award was organized for the seventh consecutive year by the RAI Association. The award aims to stimulate product innovation in the bicycle industry.

On October 25th the GoCab received a GIO award and a Special Award in the category "Respect". During the Dutch Design Week 2011 the GoCab was exhibited in the "Klokgebouw" in de Strijp S area in Eindhoven amongst the other GIO rewarded products.
The GoCab is an E bike pedicab which can safely transport 8 children. The GoCab taxi bicycle is particularly suitable for childcare and after school care organizations. Because it is an electric assisted bicycle the GoCab cycles quite light.
The "Erkenning Goed Industrieel Ontwerp" is the only award in our country that rewards the craftsmanship of both designer and client.

Last week Van der Veer Designers has organized an extensive survey of the best colors for the new Gazelle collection. At four locations of a secondary school in Culemborg 18 bikes were displayed and evaluated. The results (approximately 1100) were processed in well organized charts.

During the ‘Kind & Jugend’ exhibition in Cologne, Quinny introduced the MOODD. The result of the cooperation between Quinny and Van der Veer Designers features ‘from birth’ functionality, compactness and a high level of ‘lifestyle’. To underline the latter, the consumer has the opportunity to choose between a white or a black frame and 8 colours for the upholstery.

Relative to the years before, Ecomobiel has scaled up considerably, the event took place in AHOY Rotterdam. Exhibitors, ranging from importers of electric scooters from the far east to famous car brands, provided products for test driving inside the exhibition centre. This gave the event a dynamic edge.
We presented mobility products such as the electric bikes from Gazelle, our work for VDL Bus & Coach and the GoCab.
Ecomobiel is an exhibition for pioneers, Van der Veer Designers fitted in well.

Once again a product designed by Van der Veer Designers has managed to pick up an international award. The VDL Futura coach has been elected ‘Coach of the Year 2012’. A fantastic achievement that will help VDL position itself on the European market. Being elected twice in a row is truly unique: VDL’s Citea (also designed by Van der Veer Designers) scooped up the title last year.

On July 7, the 45 finalists in the Dutch Design Awards 2011 (DDA) have been made public. The VDL Futura is finalist in the category "Best professional product".
"The bus has a professional and modern appearance, devoid of excess. The emphasis lies mainly on the aerodynamic front with the large VDL logo and the arrow-shaped headlights. The horizontal lines clearly divide the sides of the body surfaces in functional sections; passenger compartment, luggage compartments, and engine compartment. The commanding rear with a characteristic shape causes lower pressure at the rear; form follows function."

Last june a new group of Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C) designers have been educated. As of now there is a larger capacity of certified C2C Design Consultants available to support companies in C2C-projects with regard to productdesign, graphic design, fashion, packaging, interior design, supply chain management and consultancy.
On behalf of ‘Van der Veer Designers’, Albert Nieuwenhuis, Gert-Jan van Breugel and Rik de Reuver took part in the course.
These days, sustainable design aims at developing products that are ‘less bad’ for the environment and society. C2C is more ambitious and and wants to create products that have a positive impact.
